  • RUNWAY CLOSURE SET FOR JUNE 2, 2008

The Ashtabula County Airport Authority plans to close the runway at the airport on June 2, as part of a three year plan to reconstruct the runway surface.  This first of three phases will install 6 rows of under-drains in the west end of the runway and then cap the surface with a two inch layer of fresh asphalt.  The runway was first built in 1967 and has been resurfaced twice since then. The Authority expects the construction to take 30 days. Koski Construction Company, located in Ashtabula, was awarded the contract in the Fall of 2007. Koski plans to work 10 hour days to accomplish the work within the time schedule. Since weather will play an important part in completing this work on schedule the start of construction has been planned for early summer.  If we experience good weather, the time required could be reduced.

During construction, the runway will be closed to all traffic.  Local traffic will use the parallel taxiway (40' x 4000') for operations.  Turbine and multi-engine aircraft operations will be prohibited.  Touch and Go operations will not be allowed.  The airport will be for VFR/DAY use only.  Runway lighting will be OTS for the duration of the construction.  Follow this link to a drawing of how taxiway operations will be conducted.

The original design (1967) did not include drainage under the surface of the runway.  When the drains along the side of the runway were inspected, they were found to be clogged with silt.  Without an effective drainage system, water accumulates under the runway surface, contributing to a deterioration of the runway surface.  Large and cracks and bubbles are evident in the runway surface and will be eliminated during this rebuilding project.

Funds to complete this project come from grants from the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program (AIP).  AIP funding pays 95% of the cost of the program and local funds pay the remaining 5%.  The Robert S. Morrison Foundation is providing funds for the local share through a gift of  $30,737.  The Federal Share of this $614,735 project is $583,998.
